Small Talk: Luis Tiant, Jim Rice Appear On Special Yankees Edition

It was a special edition of Small Talk this week, with kids asking questions about the great rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, and what happens when players go to the other team.

1. Why did Babe Ruth go from the Red Sox to the Yankees? Brandon Workman

Brandon Workman: I think that was actually a trade that the Red Sox and Yankees made way before my time, so I’m not sure about the details on that one.

2. How many people have you lost that went to the Yankees? Luis Tiant (former Sox pitcher), Jim Rice (former Sox outfielder)

Jim Rice: Nick, I think the only person that went to the Yankees when I was playing was Luis Tiant, as far as I remember. When he went to the Yankees, I faced him and you know what? I was the man. He was so afraid to pitch to me, he didn’t have any idea what to do. He looked at me and said “I’m gonna give you four.” He walked me every time.

Luis Tiant: I have to tip my hat to the Boston Red Sox family because they really treat me with respect and then they cheer for me and they really surprise me. All the years I’ve been here in Massachusetts, the people have been great, the fans have been great and I really appreciate it.
