Small Talk: Steven Wright Reveals The Special Power He’d Want To Have

In this week’s edition of “Small Talk,” Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright answers the big questions from little kids.

1. Do you have a waterproof case for your phone?
I do not have a water case for my phone. I try to stay away from the water with all of my electronics.

2. Do you have any vintage T-shirts?
I do have a vintage T-shirt that was given to me from (former pitcher) Jake Westbrook back in 2006. It’s a shirt that I have that I’ll keep with me until the day that I die.

3. Do you have a boombox at home?
I do not. I haven’t seen one of those in probably 15 years. I have the new small ones that run by Bluetooth that sound probably really good.

4. What’s your nickname?
I have quite a few nicknames. A lot of people call me Wrighty. I’ve got Knuckle Puck, I’ve got Knucksie, but I would say the most common one is definitely Wrighty.

5. Why did you decide to play baseball?
Because I was not good at anything else. It’s definitely something that I enjoyed. I wasn’t very good at basketball. Couldn’t shoot the ball. My dad never let me play football, so baseball was kind of my go-to as a little kid, and I’ve luckily played ever since.

6. Do you know any other languages?
I do not. I know a poquito español (a little Spanish), I know a couple words in Japanese, Chinese. I know a couple words in probably about five or six languages, but as far as saying that I know it? I’m far from it.

7. Did you ever have a pet?
I have grown up with dogs. I had a lot of dogs. I had a cat named April. Me and my wife got a cat named Emma. It was great. I’ve definitely been an animal person my whole life, and I love all kinds of animals.

8. Did you follow anybody in your family that played baseball?
I am the only one in my family that played baseball. I had a cousin that played, but he never made it past high school, so I’m the only one and I’m hopefully — if I have a son, they can follow in my footsteps, if that’s what they choose to be.

9. Are any of the Red Sox players from other countries? Where are you from?
We have quite a few guys. We have some Cubans, some Dominicans, Venezuelans. We have a couple of Japanese guys, but I am from America, and I’m proud to be an American.

10. What’s your favorite animal?
My favorite animal probably — if I had to go with a wild animal, I would say like a lion because they only work like three hours a day and they sleep the rest of the day.

11. What special power would you have?
Invisible is kind of cool. I like to fly. I think that’d be cool. Or teleporter. That’d be the thing. … That’d be great.

12. What’s your favorite movie?
“Dumb and Dumber.” The first one’s definitely up there. “Pulp Fiction.” I like Quentin Tarantino movies, but “Pulp Fiction” is probably — if I had to choose one, that’d definitely be No. 1.
